It really depends on how you are wanting to travel - I just did a quick search and found flights from Sydney to Cairns from as cheap as $145.00 AU (look on a Flight Centre at Jet Star flights). If you are wanting to road trip though the best option would be to either take the premier coach or look into hiring a car? I would guess that it would take 2-3 days to drive that distance yourself without pushing yourself too much. On rentalcars.com car hire from Sydney to Cairns is approx $120.00 for 3 days for a small car (although you would have to factor in petrol costs).
