Hi guys, hoping some of you with past experience can help me out with some ideas for my trip. Me and two friends are flying into San Francisco late August and hoping to make our way down and around the west coast and flying home from Las Vegas just over 2 weeks later. We want to do the touristy things, Alcatraz (booked and all) etc however we would also like to experience some good nightlife, can anyone recommend the best cities which would offer the best combination of the two?
There really is no concrete route planned as yet so 100% open to any suggestions!
During the summer, the best nightlife in this area is in Santa Cruz (Pacific Avenue), Santa Barbara (State Street), and a good place for the daylight hours to meet people is at the wineries in Paso Robles or in the winery spots down near Swift Street in Santa Cruz.
Monterey might have some nightlife near downtown or near Cannery Row, but as I've been married for over 25 years I'm not reallyh familiar with the best spots.

Oh, I should also mention that in the summer, you could also go east to Lake Tahoe (south shore area) and then head south from there to Las Vegas, or you could go to Murphys (a town near Yosemite) and go to the Murphys Hotel Saloon at night for fun (they also have concerts at the local Ironstone Winery, but you usually need to book those months in advance, while booking in Lake Tahoe is easy.
Lastly, just south of San Jose is the Los Gatos area. There are concerts at the local Mountain Winery (that's the name of the winery), and lots of great restaurants in the Los Gatos area itself (go to University Avenue or Santa Cruz Street where they cross Main Street).

There are numerous interesting attractions and cities on the West Coat. Personally, I would recommend (besides San Francisco and Los Angeles) cities like Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, San Bernardino and San Diego. You can take a look here (-snip-) to see a list of most of the attractions on the West Coast. Also, if you really want to experience the best of the nightlife, you should take a visit to Las Vegas.
