How are you getting home from Asia? Or are you moving on to Australia or somewhere else far away?
If you are only flying home from another Asian country flights between Bangkok and nearby countries are not expensive. Sometimes the cost of a cheap flight from Cambodia or Myanmar back to Bangkok is cheaper than using two long distance flights between UK and Thailand vs round trip to Bangkok.
Otherwise, buying a Tourist Visa might be acceptable too.
Also do a forum search on this Expat Forum.
(Sorry, I buy my bus tickets in person in Thailand as needed.)

I looked into buying a tourist visa but the embassy said it was pointless as we wont be in Thailand very long anyway...I'm thinking probably like 2 weeks only. What they did say though is that any onward travel would be fine...even a bus/train ticket...at the rate its going though...I might just end up getting a plane ticket somewhere anyway :/
Hey clean boy, I've just got back from a 4 month trip in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia, I only had a one way ticket , you don't need onward travel!! You can get bus tickets everywhere in Thailand, cheap as chips, Bangkok to Cambodia boarder is 58 baht by train also, wouldn't worry about any tickets online, get while there.

I dont think this is always true...I have heard nightmare stories of people getting turned away at the airport, it has even happened to a friend of mine while I was in Australia...turns out its down to the airline and while they might not stop you every single time they are subject to a fine from the thai authorities if they are caught doing so...I would rather not risk it to be honest...

I travelled from Bangkok to Siem Reap by bus back in 2013. 750 baht one way. Bought a ticket through www.thaiticketmajor.com and picked the ticket up at mo chit bus terminal before boarding. It leaves at 9am and arrives whenever it arrives.
The bus is operated by the transport company which is government owned. It still stopped at a fake border post to try and scam some folk though.
My advice would be to by your Cambodian visa online beforehand. $5 more but saves a bit of hassle.
Would buying the cambodian visa ahead of time be considered as onward travel? coz that could save me a lot of hassle and a lot of money haha...i assume when you get the visa you have to give a date of entry?

I doubt it. Give it a bash and report back though, you might be on to something. Yeah I seem to remember having to enter dates when applying for the visa but I imagine that would only become a problem if you tried to enter Cambodia before then.
If you are flying from the UK chances are you won't be asked for proof of onward travel, I never have. Australia is different. I had a nightmare in Sydney airport trying to buy a cheap flight out of Thailand as jetstar wouldn't let me board without it. 750 baht is £15. Worth it for peace of mind imo.
You could try looking for a cheap one way flight out of Thailand but I doubt you would get it any cheaper.
I agree although not sure why they would do that in australia and not england?
after speaking with a friend, he suggested I book a hotel in Cambodia as well as get the tourist visa which might sweeten the deal a bit? How can they say no to that?
I'm not sure a hotel booking would count as onward travel. Probably only a bus or plane ticket would guarantee it.
I can't comment on trains as I have never crossed a border on one, although they are very cheap within Thailand. There is an excellent website, www.seat61.com that gives very detailed information on train travel. You should check it out.
