So I have somewhat of a plan for my european vacation, if anyone thinks i should add, take away or spend longer in 1 country to another lket me know. The time frame is exactly as i will be heading home straight after Oktoberfest in Munich.
Although Prague is beautiful 8 days may be too long. You could go from Prague to Dresden or Nuremberg, then Munich. Both cities were destroyed during World War, later rebuilt, are worth visiting.
Are these days including or excluding travel days? Most of these distances are pretty long, and you'll effectively lose the entire day to travelling. So if you're counting including travel days, then I'd spread the extra time from Prague to all your 3-day cities, so you will actually have at least three full days everywhere.
I think some of your stays are too long, unless you really want to see all museums, just spend some time in a pub and sleep late or so.
For example Bratislava is very small for a capital city and a day or so is enough in my opinion. Also Cologne is rather boring and not very big either. I would visit more places during your visit to Europe and if you can visit some smaller towns and more nature too.
Beautiful cities in Europe I admit but you'll be sorry not to visit some more rural places.
Have fun
I agree with everyone else on here and second what Warsaw Traveller said. Dresden and Nuremberg were my two favorite cities in Germany. You could also do Berlin if you wanted, Regensberg, Bamberg too. There are so many possibilities. Do some more research and you will find many interesting places you would like to see.
And cut down on some of those stays (if they are full days - excluding travel)
Now this totally depends on personal preferences but...
i would skip Bratislava, Krakow and Cologne. They are nice cities but...uh well no true highlights! (cologne will have the dome but that's it!....oh and lots of parties)
Instead i'd add Dresden move on to Paris and take the train to London.
Or you could take the train from Viena to Venice then head a bit south to Florence and Rome instead.
If you are in Munich i'd recommend a detour to Schloss Neuschwannstein
I personally can't recommend Nürnberg - or well it is a nice city but nothing special.
If vienna is your last stop before Münich you might consider dropping by for a day (that's enough) in Salzburg.
I mosty agree with the things pointed out above, but:
- If you are a single guy and like to party don't skip Krakow Plus it has Auschwitz closeby, which I would really recommend to anyone (16 and older) to go to (all movies I saw about it, like Schindler's list, were funny jokes compared to how it really was).
- From Prague you could visit some smaller towns in Czech Republic. Google Cesky Krumlov for example, a great medieval town with a castle and bears. You can also easily kayak/raft from the town. But touristy.
- And if you go to Zürich you should really take one of the train journeys through the Swiss Alps. I did the Bernina Express and stopped over on +2000m Alp Grüm (google it) for a few hours to get a next train to Zürich. I will never forget the beautiful nature I saw up there. Going to Zürich just for the city isn't worth it in my opnion - the Swiss themselves will tell you also that a visit to their country without seeing the mountains is a bad deal, and they are so right.
- The Oktoberfest was great! I was only one weekend there, but 5 days are better. Try to get a place in a tent before 14:00 every day. They will close by then (some even earlier).
- And in general: try to add some nature and smaller towns. After 3 cities you will start to feel like it's starting to look a bit the same. That's the moment you will need some rural place/ nature/excercise/lake for 1 or 2 days to be able to appreciate the next cities as well.
Will you be taking the train to most of these places or flying?
I think 5 days is a long time to spend in Budapest. I spent 3 full days in Budapest and it was more than enough to see all the sights and enjoy the restaurants and night life.
Also, 8 days is a long time in Prague, so I would definitely shorten that part of your trip. Cesky Krumlov is beautiful! You can take the train there and spend 2 days, one night there (that's the most I would spend there).
There's also a place called Bad Gastien that is worth going to in Austria and it is a great place to do a lot of extreme sports.
Thanks for all the input guys, much appreciated...
I have taken all thoughts into consideration, and will adapt accordingly.
Pelinrage..I have always wanted to go to krakow, mainly due to Aushwitz, Its such a big part of such horrible history that I have to see, I also want to see the salt mines, which i have heard great things about. I also have seen enough of London, I'm from Wales, so its literally next door, doesn't do anything for me.
I am meeting friends in Cologne and Zurich, which is why mainly they are included.
I shall look up this place cesky crumlov, sounds a cool place, and will also break up my journey a lil..Also interested in the excursion up the alps, maybe I could persuade my friend to take me.
Anyway thanks for the input again,.
There is a big KZ in Dachau as well - which is like 30min by train from Munich.
