I travelled Sydney to Cairns when I was in Australia. Took me the course of 2 months but you can do it in a month easy!
Here are the places I went and I recommend every single place!
1 - Mojo Surf Camp, Arrawarra Beach (2 days)
2 - Byron Bay (3 days) - Nimbin (Hippy Town), sea kayaking, partying
3 - Surfers Paradise (5 days) - Theme Parks, Partying (A MUST!!!!!!)
4 - Noosa (5/6 days) - Canoeing, surfing, chilling on beach every day, Steve Irwin Zoo
5 - Fraser Island (Rainbow Beach) (5 days) - 4x4 camping tour (A MUST!!!!!)
6 - Agnes Waters (4 days) - Scooteroo, castaway tour
7 - The Whitsundays (Airlie Beach) (5 days) - 3 day sailing tour, scuba diving, snorkling (A MUST!!!!!)
8 - Magnetic Island (Townsville) (3 days) - Koala sanctuary, chilling, full moon party
9 - Mission Beach (3 days) - White water rafting, skydive (A MUST!!!!!!)
10 - Cairns (3 weeks) - Great barrier reef scuba diving, snorkling, chilling, partying
The total cost for me over the 2 months was around $3000 for the tours and most accommodation and $5000 spending, but I was reckless with my money, I bought expensive clothes, food and drink. Paid for scuba diving certification and my own fins, mask, snorkel etc.
You could do all that on $6000 if you are careful, but as you have a month and skip a few things then $3000-$4000 (£1500-£2500) will be an insane trip! Hope this gives you some ideas.

Your spending list is formidable, but the context helps a lot, that part was actually really useful. We seem to have similar interests anyway, I will be hitting up as much surfing as possible, and diving, and the plan is to learn to dive in Thailand before I get to Oz which should make things cheaper. In short, I am almost certainly going to hit your must-do list, and also Australia zoo because, well, Steve Irwin.
Anyone else have something that wasn't on Adz's list? Also this is a long shot, but if anyone knows whether or not its possible to get work on yachts in Whitsundays if you're a qualified sailor by just approaching boats, or if there's anywhere specific to try, I'm very interested.

Yea getting certified in Cairns wasn't cheap ($820 if i remember rightly), but getting certified on the GBR, you can't beat that!
I know it's possible to get work on the boats on the whitsundays, but you would probably need to commit to at least a few months, but try your luck, you don't know if you don't ask!
Oh nice one, thanks man. One last thing, how did you travel? I have a feeling your method will be more comfortable/expensive/better than what I'm going to attempt, but I'm still interested: coach, liftshare, flying?
I went by greyhound coach, although I driving it would of been really fun too, but that's more expensive.
I think for a 3 month pass on the coach from Sydney to cairns (hop on, hop off) was around $300-$400
