Travelling to NZ July-September time

Hey guys, me and a couple of friends are travelling to NZ this year to work and travel. I have a job lined up for my last 3-6 months in Auckland as it will lead to a sponsorship in Sydney.

The absolute minimum I recommend anyone to spend in New Zealand is three weeks; just enough to give a taste of all the various things the country has to offer. To see the majority of worthwhile places would probably take a lifetime - but three months should at least give you the idea that you've seen more than half of the highlights from most travel guides.
Recommendations - with a strong focus on gorgeous nature and hiking opportunities, since those are my interest, and you don't say what yours are - would be: Cape Reinga (independently, so you can stick around for sunset, and maybe walk the beach toward Cape Maria van Diemen), the various Kauri groves in northland, Whangarei Falls and the series of trails following the river from there, Bream Head Scenic Reserve (Whangarei Heads; insane hills and rock formations, beautiful hiking, definitely a hidden gem), Cathedral Cove, Mount Maunganui, Hobbiton at Matamata is a must, the Tongariro Crossing (but take some extra time for other hikes on other days; the Silica Rapids are nice, too), the Queen Charlotte track, whale-watching at Kaikoura, Nelson, Abel Tasman National Park, Punakaiki at high tide, Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, Thunder Falls at Haast Pass, the One Mile Creek track at Queenstown, and onward to Ben Lomond, at least a day of the Kepler track at Te Anau, Milford Sound, Mt. Cook, Lake Tekapo (my favorite place in all of New Zealand to just settle down for a couple of days and relax, gazing out over the ever-changing colors of the lake, and hiking Mt. John for an amazing cup of hot chocolate at the observatory cafe), Arthur's Pass.

No idea about ski resorts. I imagine most will want their employees to stay for the duration of the season, and that being available for a while before high season really starts will be beneficial to your chances, so if you only arrive in July, all the vacancies might already be filled by then.
