Want to move or travel to New Zealand

Hello All!

I can definitely recommend going there for a full year on a . Sights in New Zealand are densely packed, so it's easy to go away weekends while working and still get to see quite a lot. Do be careful not to get stuck working in one place for too long, but to actually spend solid time doing nothing but travelling before settling down for a next stint of working. But yeah, plenty to see for a year; after five visits and well over a year total spent in the country, I still have a long list of places I still want to see, and an even longer list of places I want to revisit.

When visiting for a full year, renting definitely doesn't make any sense. Either buy a cheap car off a previous backpacker, or travel by public transport for getting from place to place, and only rent for a few days at a time when going somewhere less accessible by public transport (not a whole lot of such places around; there's daily busses to almost anywhere, so it's really only some national parks where you can benefit from having your own car).

No idea on your dog, but I imagine it'd involve a lengthy quarantine procedure with a lot of medical documentation. And then again the other way 'round when you're getting ready to leave the country.

Did you find it easy or hard to find work and to move around? were they willing to hire you even if you weren't staying long? Also, was it fairly easy to save up money? I know i've heard it can be somewhat pricey there.

Hi - yes it can be pretty pricey here, especially Auckland because accommodation isn't cheap. But there are usually more job opportunities here. As a counsellor, especially if you have some paper qualifications, it might be possible to secure a work position before you leave the States (you don't have to tell your potential employer that you'll only be working for six months or whatever). The Department of Corrections are regularly looking for probation officers and secondary schools (state and private) employ youth counsellors - try Seek NZ and the Education Gazette NZ if you want employment in these areas. Otherwise it's usually possible to get either bar work or café work around the city.

Personally, I think it's a great place to live and work.
