Hi travelers! We are a couple that is traveling currently on bicycle from Cancun, Mexico to Panama. We have around half a year for this and are trying to do this cheap. While we travel we carry with us our tent, mats, sleeping bags, clothes, etc.. etc.. Its been quite a challenge and we always get into new fun situations!
Best of luck for a safe passage. Each country (Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica) has its particularities. When conversant in L.A.Spanish you' ll have an asset. When not, a liability. Until Costa Rica and Panama, by which time you will feel better.Have a safe journey!
Wishing you good luck, too. The U.S. State Department -- http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english.html -- currently has travel warnings on several of the countries you will be traversing through, such as Mexico (including its border with Central America), Honduras and El Salvador. It notes the crime rate in Guatemala is "critical." Be extra careful. In some areas, it might be wise to take public transportation instead of cycling. Arranging to pitch your tent near someone's house might be safer than pitching it in an uninhabited area. It's better to be safe than sorry.
