I would check grassroots volunteering, or on websites like helpx or workaway to see what's available. As most of these you would be communicating / interacting directly with the organization the costs are much lower compared to going with a voluntourism based company. However, please take into consideration the time and resources that it does cost you to volunteer and seriously consider the duration you're willing to commit to this before pursuing it.
I volunteered with IVHQ in October, some of the programmes can be expensive but I know quite a few are low budget. I volunteered in an orphanage in Cambodia for children with disabilities and HIV, it was quite cheap and very rewarding!!!- Also if you live in the UK try VSO--no fees, just have to do fundraising

ICS is free, you just have to raise £800 beforehand for the charity and flights, vaccinations, visa and insurance etc is all included. You don't really get to pick where your going but it's really good value and as it's a government organisation you know the volunteer work you are doing is beneficial to the country
