Just thought I would write a quick note about our experience travelling from Nepal to China via Tibet as I found it very hard to find any concrete information before leaving. We arrived in Kathmandu and had no problem finding tour offices who would book us a tour through Tibet to China. We asked for a 25 day China visa and they also said that was no problem. Anyway we ended up with a 30 day visa, so all the comments about 15 day maximum, I don't know where that came from. The tour cost $584 which included our first train, apparently a condition of the visa which was apparently $180, but we later found out it was actually $100. The accomadation on the tour was very good, the first couple of nights were dorms and then it was luxury hotels, listed at about £75 a night. Anyway everything went great, no problems. We didn't actually try to extend our visa, but lots of people including hotel staff said it was not possible. Hope this helps somebody else planning to do the same thing.
