It is not harder to do it the other way (most Australian's who do a rtw trip go from Australia - Asia - Europe - North America - Australia). That is travelling the same direction you are talking about travelling. I think the reason most from the UK tend to go the other way is because a lot of people going from the UK are coming to Australia for an extended period of time and need to maximise the time in Australia by arriving sooner rather than later.
Going from East - West helps with jetlag. You don't suffer as easily with jetlag when you go east to west, but when you go from west - east most suffer jetlag.
