How are you going to be travelling and what kind of experience are you after? Travelling Sydney, Port Douglas, Darwin and Broome is a long way, when I travelled that distance I took 2-3 months so you might be a bit pressed for time driving/bussing. If you fly some sections of it then it's not so bad.
I think Perth up the west coast to Darwin would be a nice trip, but it's all fairly remote. Otherwise you could do the normal Sydney-Cairns east coast trip.
Where you go depends on three things -
a) Your budget
b) Which city you are flying out from
c) The type of holiday/experience you want
Staying in the northern part of Australia will give you warmer weather. Tours from Darwin>Broome and vv are not cheap. A few suggestions -
Fly to Darwin, allow two weeks to see the Top End (Kakadu, Litchfield, Tiwi Islands, Arnhem Land) and perhaps Katherine.
Fly to Cairns travel north, Port Douglas, Cow Bay, Cape Tribulation and up along the Bloomfield Track to Cooktown. Then bus back to Cairns. That's your third and fourth weeks. The cheapest way to do this area is with Country Road Coaches.
Exactly you have to tell us little more about your budget and the total expenses, you'd like to spent.
Australia is a big country and there are many things to see and go around the cities. You make a itinerary for the top places like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tasmania as these are the big cities to cover all the things in a short time of period.

Tasmania will be getting rather chilly by now, so if thats not your kinda thing then you can scratch that off your list for a starter! Melbourne will also be cooling down, but I found Melbourne to have a lot of charm in early winter - yes, its cooler and you may need an umbrella from time to time, but its still a great city From Melbourne you could do the Great Ocean Road - a trip I'm yet to do myself, but it comes highly recommended...and theres a travel option for all budgets from backpacker kind of buses to something more high class. Adelaide is a nice city, it has a much slower pace than other Aussie cities but I reckon its worth checking out. From Adelaide you can go up through the centre (I know you've mentioned you've seen Uluru before), all the way to Darwin.
Honestly, theres many possibilities, this is just one idea that came to mind straight away...happy travels what ever you decide

Yes it does, but you would enjoy it much more in warmer weather. Unless a visitor was specifically coming to Melbourne I'd not recommend it during winter.

Adelaide is the most boring city in all Australia - the city is dead by 6.00pm and there's no life there. Apart from the Barossa, Hahndorf and a tram ride to Glenelg there isn't much else. The most excitement we had was sitting in Rundle Mall with a Gloria Jean's people-watching!
Thanks to everyone who replied to my post! You have certainly given me food for thought! My daughter and I are now in Sydney, and we have arranged to head off to Darwin/Katherine/Kakadu for around 10 days or so, then fly down to Brisbane to explore Fraser/Moreton/Lamington National Park, then back to Sydney for a couple of nights before returning back to the U.K. The problem is that there is so much to see and not nearly enough time! I feel I should have organised myself a bit better and maybe flown into Darwin, but I got a really good price on the flight into Sydney... Swings and roundabouts!
Ruby - you've made a wise choice - better to stick to the northern parts of Australia in winter. Enjoy your trip and have a good time.
