Travel insurance - kinda urgent!

HI.. I'm planning on booking my round the world flights tomorrow..
And my travel agent guy said with that company you have to get travel insurance before or at the same time as flights other wise flights aren't covered in the insurance..
Is this the same for all travel insurance?
Do I have to get travel insurance before i book my flights or doesn't it matter?
Please help!
Thanks
Claire

He might be talking about cancellation insurance, which is totally separate to 'travel' insurance in my opinion. Travel insurance in my mind covers things like medical, theft, maybe some liability etc. while actually travelling. Cancellation insurance is an insurance they will usually try to sell you which might cover you in case you have to cancel. I put might in bold there, as different companies have very different policies. You will often not get back everything you paid, even if you do fall under whatever the criteria are you need to fall under. Also note that the criteria usually is a sickness or illness that is sudden (ie. you couldn't see it coming) and so severe that you have to cancel. Things like deaths in close family etc. usually will not warrant any kind of payout.

I tend to be very much the kind of person that doesn't buy cancellation insurance, figuring I'd pretty much have to be on my death bed to give up on a trip, and if I am in that state, the lost money is going to be the least of my worries It's also usually ridiculously expensive, a lot of quotes I've seen recently are between 5 and 10% of the trip cost....
