Madrid plus Barcelona in 4 days, is that possible?
I'm planning to visit both cities in September and am planning 3 days for each. Plus a side trip to Toledo and maybe even Seville. Not sure how long I'll need for all!
it is just quick decision for break..
I am planning 2 days for each.. it is just to see popular places of both cities..
my friends have already visited both cities and as they are saying it can be quite enough for short break..
one day city tour in Madrid,
one day city tour in Barcelona,
one day spending at beach near Barcelona,
one day for random visits..
. Is there anything cooler? Definitely, but you're far away from home, and no one you know will see you.

I give you top 10 destinations of the of madrid.
1. The Palacio Real, or Royal Palace (pictured right) is probably one of the most important places in Madrid
2. The Plaza Mayor (pictured left), is a huge square constructed in 1617. It has been pedestrianised and can be entered by any one of nine arches.
3. Puerta de Alcala. It can be seen in the centre of the Plaza de la Independencia on Calle de Alcala.
4. In the Plaza Colon (pictured left) you will find several monuments to Columbus and his travels.
5. You must also see the massive Parque del Buen Retiro. The park has a central lake, numerous fountains and statues and pleasant walkways.
6. There are more than enough museums including the famous Prado Museum.
7. Another important fountain is that of Cibeles, the Greek Goddess of fertility which stands in front of the Bank of Spain in the Plaza de la Cibeles.
8. The Gran Via is one of the most animated and commercial streets in the city.
9. There is little left of Medieval Madrid but you will find the original layout of narrow streets meandering south from Main Street (Calle Mayor).
10. The Plaza del Callao is the centre for department stores and cinemas yet just a couple of streets away you will find a 16th century convent.

I would say three days each is better.
For Madrid you could extend it with a daytrip to Toledo and/or Segovia. (in fact there are many more worthwhile trips.)
For Sevilla I would take at least 2 whole days. If you go by AVE, you could make a stop in Cordoba as well. (leave Madrid early, get out at Cordoba 1.45 hrs later, and in the beginning of the evening you take the rest of the journey of 45 minutes to Sevilla).
But then you should also get to see the Alhambra in Granada

The Plaza de Colon has been redone, and still is not a very nice square. I would skip it.
I am missing Sol in this list, since the works finished her, it is a very nice square again.
What you refer to as Medieval Madrid is La Latina, but it never was medieval, as Madrid is a very young city, and only founded around 500 years ago.
Other tips: look for the Pantheon del hombres Illustres, near Atocha Station. For shopping: Calle Fuencarral (no traffic free!!) and if you want to get out of the city: go for a walk at the Casa the Campo.
Museums are opened on Sunday, when entrance is for free (but they close early), Reina Sofia is also for free on saturdays afternoon.
If you have 4 days, pick just 1 city and do day trips from there. Giving 2 days to each city is not enough at all and will feel like all you do is running around from place to place.
I agree, 2 days for each city is not enough, they deserve much more. I would pick barcelona, with no doubt! Even it is smaller and it is not the capital city, it is much more interesting than madrid, and much more beautiful, and it has beaches and a lot of kind people, I simply love it!
HAve you thought on where are you going to stay? Alternative to hotel: -snip-holiday apartments, what about that?
