Hello - has anyone done this trip before? I am looking for the cheapest way to travel... it looks like it will be around £120 to fly.
The "cheapest" way would be by bus- entering southern Laos from Stung Treng then heading to the 4000 islands/ Don Det in Laos- Personally I would recommend spending some time there, but of course it depends on how much time you have and what your interests are.
If you are just looking to head to Vientiane and Luang Prabang and have more limited time and don't want to also explore the south- then flying may be your best option.
The journey from Siem Reap into Lao can be an interesting one if you are up for an adventure. You will need to get a bus to Kratie then you can get one of the Asian style speed boats, big open engine the back which sounds like a jack hammer. They will give you a helmet and a seat with just enough room to sit with your knees under your chin and then you sit there for 4 hours while they drive you at break neck speed up the river into Lao. It's definitely a cheap way to travel, an experience you will never forget and also a quite dangerous as if you hit a floating log in the river your boat is likely to disintegrate into splinters while you hit the water at 50mph.
The choice is yours!
With regard to the speed boats - they are considered unsafe. Going by slow boat is a much safer option.
