i think in august is really hot!!!
Aug is summer time in Beijing which has extreme temperatures. In recent past the temperatures in Beijing was around 41 deg C!! So take precautions.
In 3days you can see: Tiananmen square and Forbidden city. you need almost one day. Another day you can visit Great wall of China Badaling side. Note this is outside Beijing. So you need one full day. Last day you can visit Temple of Heaven or just roam around the city.
Actually one needs a week to see Beijing attractions.

Indeed three days is quite short to see the whole of Beijing, but it's actually not a destination of its own, but merely a starting point of the actual travel (which is the trans-mongolian railway).
Good to hear that visiting the wall is posible, and outside the city. when it's really that hot, its good to leave town...

Make it to September, August is bit hot. Also you can enjoy the three top cities tour in a short time.
