2 Irish Girls looking looking for Travel Buds -4TH June 2010

Hi Were 2 Irish Girls planning to travel around Thailand,Laos ,Cambodia ,Vietnam... the Islands for 6 weeks exactly.

Hi Irish girls,

That is fantastic news you are still travelling to Thailand with the current situation in Bangkok. I think you will find that the media has hyped up the problems out there and you will probably find that you do not actually see any trouble at all. Thailand is a beautiful country and is truly deserved to be named the land of smiles as the people are so friendly and whiling to help you out. Be a bit street wise to avoid getting ripped off, i.e. if someone asks you how long you have been in the country tell them at least a month so they won’t over charge you.

You cannot miss the trip to the river Kwai, only 2 hours west from Bangkok, it's a great spot to hang out and if you get a chance to stay on a floating hut by the river it will be a highlight of your trip! Riding elephants and bamboo rafting in the dense jungles of Chiang Mai is easily organised once you get a sleeper train from Bangkok up north. A stopover in Ayutthaya to see the ancient temples will definitely give you true a sense of history in this tropical country.

As far as a budget, it really depends on how much you want to spend. Backpacker rooms are from £2 -£5 a night, food sold on the street is fine to eat but try to find somewhere that is busy as the locals generally know where is good to eat and you will also find food that hasn’t been sitting around all day in the sun.

6 weeks including basic travel, accommodation, food and a beer in the evening, I reckon on the cheap you could do it on £300-£400

Have fun!
Tim

Hi Tim!!

Thanks so much for the reply!
Well we were planning on avoiding Bangkok totally and just getting the first flight out of there as soon as we arrived unfortunatly , but then again I have not heard great recommendations about Bangkok so maybe it is good that we are avoiding the city would I be right in saying that?
Also is Chaing Mai still safe to travel to ?
Ok thanks for the tips we will indefinitly stick out a mile with our pasty skins!!
Really you can live on 60 pound a week!!As a tourist it is always so much harder to find the bargains as you never know where they are!
Also would you reccomend carrying more dollars or Baht around and bring a debit card or what would be the best option that way?

Damn.... why cant people go in october, I think im the only person going that month

hey its great your not cancelling, you will have an awesome time.

im speaking just in terms of thailand now as im not visiting the other places you are until september onwards, but from the research ive done and my own experiences your budget is fine, i was in thailand for 6 weeks and spent about your budget, but i was doing it alone, mainly staying in hotels not hostels, i took loads of day trips, was out at bars and clubs most nights, ate out all the time etc, so with 2 of u + hostels etc and going halfs on stuff like taxis, u will be fine. when i go again in sept i will be sure to be abit more econmoical! even hotels are cheap as u pay for the price of the room and not per person, so obviously double the cost for a single traveller.

i wasnt in love with bangkok but its still a place u should check out should the trouble calm down, i went to pattaya which is around an hours drive from bangkok, but i did find it to be pretty seedy, luckily i had a friend there who took me to places like the waterfalls, elephant sanctuary and stuff like that, but i mainly travelled to the south, phuket, phi phi islands, places like that. i would really recommend phuket as its very chilled, i didnt find people hassling me, also phi phi islands are not far from there, as well as visiting koh samui if your able too.

i didnt take tons of cash as there are cash machines at 7-11's everywhere and i never had a problem using them with just my debit card + i didnt want to carry tons of money round with me.

if u were just a single female traveller id say find someone to go with just to be safe, but as there are two of u i really think u will be fine, i met quite a few girls in couples over there who had a great trip and for the most part did not feel vulnerable.

hopefully u can post when u get back about your experiences and what you thought of the places u did visit, as im always looking to find out more about cambodia, vietnam and laos.

if u have any questions about thailand feel free to ask as i know some really nice places to stay, hope u both have an awesome time, mikey

i also arrive in BKK on the 4th june and am ther for 1 month

wooooooooohooooooooo

Hi Irish Girls!

I fly out to Bangkok on the 2nd June with 3 mates...2 of which fly back home after 2 weeks, then me and my mate are travelling Thailand, Loas, Cambodia and Vietnam!

We are in the same situation as you as in we dont really know what to do when we land in Bangkok!

Anyway we have decided to take the train then ferry to Koh Phangan straight after landing...spend 2 weeks round the islands, on the beaches and partying a little! I have been told that the islands are not affected at all by the protests, they are just a bit quieter on the tourists than usual...probably a good thing!

I think you will be fine on the £1000, thats about my budget aswell over 6 weeks.

Hope you have a great time and by the looks of it we may be around about the same places at the same time!

Sam

All is well now in Bangkok.. life comes to normal phase after stand out against govt. rules.
You have to keep emergency numbers with you in case of any problem out there.

Have fun
Sean

oh also going alone and no idea where i am going

Hey Irish,

I would not miss out Bangkok, it would be a real shame. You could stay near Koh San Road which is backpacker heaven. Probably best not to actually stay on that road as it is always super busy and noisy but at the end of the road take a right then the first left round the temple and you will find a great little street which is close enough to the fun and an easy walk, but also a bit of peace and quiet when you want to get away.

Bangkok has some great sights from the temples, weekend markets, parks, pat pong to see a ping pong show (just to say you have seen one!), boat ride to the floating market, or head to Lumpini park where you can watch the locals doing yoga or go along to one of the days when people just go there to laugh to make them self's feel good! It's super random. It would be a real shame to miss out on the capital.

Chiang Mai is all good now too. Only trouble there has been cleared out. Make sure you stay near the old town as it's really beautiful. Almost all the hostel run great jungle treks too, and the cooking courses up there are great fun.

£60 a week will be plenty on a budget and there are cash machines everywhere in Thailand unless you got to really remote places. Take some traveller cheques just in case you lose you debit card though, but no need for dollars in Thailand.

Be careful when entering Cambodia and you are changing up you money near the border as they will try to rip you off. Check exchange rates and try and get you cash before you enter the country.

Hope your planning is going well, sound like you might have a few people to head out there with too.
take it easy
Tim
