Have I budgeted enough money?

Hi,

If travelling by yourself definately not as rooms in Asia are pretty much the same for a single and a double and with nobody to split the cost with you will be paying loads.

Plus Hong Kong, Tokyo, China and Thailand can be pretty expensive and so if I were you i would definately try to save more as I dont think you are being realistic...................

I have worked out that you have got 3 months, so £233 a month, which is about £58 a week! No way.....

Nick,
Sophia is right. I figure a basic budget for: room, food, transport, tours at $30/day. This is fan rooms, eating street or with locals, bus only, no trains or planes, water with meals, no alcohol. That is still $900/month. Your 700GBP is enough for 1 month in SEA.

I suggest you wait until you have saved more money or pick 1-2 countries you really want to see and spend 1 month in Asia. Good luck with your planning.

I would say you need to revise that itinerary and focus on the cheaper countries (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and rural India) and save the expensive places (Japan, Malaysia and Hong Kong) until your pockets are deeper.

I thought you'd all say that!

I actually have enough but my girlfriend is the one on a budget.

Do you think if we removed Vietnam from the Itinery and stayed in Thailand longer and increased the budget up to £1700 to last us all those days (92 to be precise) it would be enough?

I'm personally worried about Hong Kong/Japan/Beijing cost-wise as I reckon they'll eat our money the most. Removing Vietnam may not sound like a saver but flights are difficult for us and it'd give us about £200 or so to play with. I'd remove Hong Kong/Japan/Beijing but these are the highlights for my girlfriend.

Thanks,

In fact - If I did remove Japan/Hong Kong/Beijing from the itinery and spent more time in SEA, do you reckon that I'd save a significant amount - both flight and cost wise? I'd certainly be in the doghouse for suggesting so, but to leave one of these out with good financial reasoning does make sense.

Nick,
I think in USD, so 1,700GBP is roughly $2,500. Staying 92 days comes out to under $30/day. For both of you. Your room costs won't double, but your food, transport, tour cost will. One of you could survive on a very bare-bones budget of $30/day, not both of you. I just don't think you have enough for 92 days in SEA. Increase your budget or cut back on the number of days. That is my best advice.

Thanks Mike,

Do you reckon if I had $37 a day and my girlfriend had £37 a day then we could manage to do 90 days in India, Malaysia/Thailand, China (or Japan)? I can use my savings to help my girlfriend if this is the case. I think that cutting either China or Japan may have to be done. If we do go to Japan it would only be a short stay though.

With this much doubt the whole trip is in real danger of becoming a constant worry about money - and chances are you'll run out anyway! Don't punish yourself. Plan something you KNOW you can afford and have a decent backup. You'll have a happier time wherever you go. If it was me, I'd go for the long option and visit India. Just my thoughts.

edit: Are there ticket options that allow travelers to return earlier than planned?

It is possible to travel on a really basic budget, you just have to be really careful. I have travelled around India on about £15 a day including room, food, travel but it will involve going to local restaurants/street stalls, haggling for room prices - especially if u want to stay there for a while and travelling in the lower classes. I would get rid of Japan as this will kill your wallet!
