to celebrate my birthday in Melbourne or Cairns????

My friend and I fly into Melbourne on 27th September 2010 and we are then planning to take an internal flight straight up to Cairns to work our way down the coast to Sydney for New Year (when booking our RTW flights we ran out of mileage to be able to fly straight into Cairns)
My birthday is 30th September and I can’t decide whether to stay in Melbourne for a few days and go out and celebrate being another year older in the Melbourne nightlife and then fly up or whether to fly straight up and celebrate in the warm on the beach? I’ve never been to Australia so what does anyone think would be best?

DEFINATELY Cairns!! I celebrated my 21st birthday in Cairns and my friend and I did a 14,000 foot sky dive over mission beach it was aaaaamazing...definately reccomend it. There is alot more going on in Cairns, great barrier reef, white water rafting, bungy etc. Cairns was my fav place in the whole of Oz. Theres some brilliant bars and i think the weather is good at that time of year. Cairns is a lot smaller than Melbourne though and depends if your after a night out in the big city or a more chilled affair

I'd say celebrate it in Melbourne - Cairns is fun and very laid-back - you can have that when you get to Cairns , but if you want something special celebrate it in Melbourne. Of course Melbourne is better in that regard - I'm in Melbourne! GEtting a for sunrise over the Yarra Valley would be something to consider. (The Yarra Valley is one of my favourite places in Victoria)

thanks both for the info
one vote for each!
its not a special birthday and I won't have a big budget to do anything really lavish or anything I have friends in Melbourne so it would be nice to have a night outwith them but I'm a sunshine girl and leaning towards wanting to be on the beach for my bday!

Hi Jodie,

The first time I was in Cairns I got a big surprise, there is no beach!! Unfortunately it's all mud flats along the Cairns esplanade (have a look at google maps) and you'll need to go either north or south to get on a beach, my favourite in the area is Mission Beach, but the town is small and seems quiet. The beaches up north like Yorkeys Knob are closer to Cairns, so you could always travel up there.

Anyway, I'd choose Cairns over Melbourne but if you're looking for a city on a beach then the Gold Coast is a good option.

Have fun!

Tim

thanks for the tips Tim! flights booked to go up to Cairns now, I want sunshine for my birthday!
