There is a funny list of hostels here for LA (don't worry, some of them have private rooms if you are with your boyfriend!) and they look quite fun with swimming pools and Tiki gardens!
The Backpackers Paradise hostel in LA has nice private rooms. They do free (although basic) dinner each night or you can dine at the restaurant and they give you coupons for free glasses of wine at the on site bar. They also have free drop offs to a trolley that will take you down to the beach which is quite a nice little added extra
On the subject of cafes in the USA, I thought this site might be useful to foreign travelers - (good regional food)
