Car. July is far too cold for campervan in July, imo. (I've known people who've done it, but brrr!)
Any company should be cheap in July, since it's total low season. I've had good experiences with .
I agree that a car is the best option at that time of year. Last time I travelled round the South Island I used ; they have flexible pick up and drop off locations and were good value.
Another who advocates going for a sedan. Stay in hostels and/or caravan parks. One thing you need to remember is some roads may be closed due to weather.
i know this is in the wrong thread,but didnt want to start a new one for such a simple question,is NZ still busy with travelers in the off season,as thats when im there,and is there still plenty to do when its soooo cold
If by the "off" season you mean winter, the busiest areas would be where ski and snow sports are.

It's much quieter in the winter apart from, as Araluen says, in the ski areas. I have travelled in NZ in the winter and it's a good time to do it as there is rarely a need to book accommodation in advance and prices are lower. There is still plenty to do!
thanks for both replies,im there for two months,im thinking thats to long to spend in winter,especially as i havent ever done any winter sports and probably cant afford to,plus im alone!
