For a start I would state your citizenship, as that's a crucial piece of information for most visas. Getting a work visa for the USA is nearly impossible for pretty much any nationality though; they just don't want you there.
Right
1) Figure out what the visa requirements are, whether you need one, how long it is, etc.. Unless you are from Australia it's impossible to get a work visa in the US without a sponsor. If you are from Australia you can get a working Holiday Visa. While you can work here illegally, I would not recommend it, if you are caught (very low probability), it would pretty much preclude you from ever getting a visa to the US again.
2) Buy a travel book about the US, dog ear the pages that hold things of interest
3) Ask more specific questions once you have an idea on where you want to go, what you want to see, etc... Go to hostelworld and other sites to see what the living costs will be. New York city cost at minimum $50 a day for lodging and food, easily for $100 for a 'normal' place... while Lexington, KY could be as cheap as $30 a day for a reasonable place...

Maybe I'm reading this incorrectly but it's not that we "don't want you". It's just that with unemployment being over 10% for years now there aren't enough jobs for Americans. So it's natural that a working visa will be nearly impossible to obtain and for good reason IMO.

An easy way of becoming employed in the States is by being a camp counselor. They don't pay you loads, and you have to really like kids to enjoy the experience, but you get about 4 or 5 months on the visa, and you're the right age for becoming a counselor. Have a look at some sites such as campamerica.com or ccusa.com to see if its for you - you'd have to wait for the next summer season, as this years season has begun already. I have done this experience twice and really enjoyed camp, and my travel around the USA

Wow that's very good info. How hard is it to get a work visa?
Theres an application process for the camp counselor program, but they will accept any suitable applicant with no criminal convictions, and who has either a useful skill for camp life (could be anything from swimming, abseiling to arts), or experience working with children. Camp directors like to employ internationals to add a bit of flavour to their camp The visa allows you to work at camp for approx 2 - 2.5 months, then the remainder is open for you to use travelling around the USA
