U can still get the Schengen visa even though ur UK visa got rejected. But u certainly would need to provide the following essential documents:
3 years IT papers/Form 16
6 months Bank Statements
Confirmed Air tickets
Confirmed hotel bookings for the duration of stay
Proof of sufficient funds(Mutual funds, shares, fixed deposits, etc)
Overseas insurance
In the absence of above essential documents, Schengen visa is usually denied.

Rejection of UK visa has nothing to do with your applying for schengen visa. So you can apply for schengen visa.
Important documents needed to apply for schengen visa have been informed by Arif.

Unfortunately, Citybell's wrong. Even though visa issuing is done separately and independently in UK and the Schengen area, they do exchange information on a regular basis. So it's quite likely that all Schengen countries have access to the fact that you have been denied a UK visa.
Anyway, I don't think you have much to fear from that. The basis for your earlier rejection was administrative: if you have your paperwork in order this time, there is not much cause for concern. You won't be given a harder time than any other Indian citizen (which, believe me, is hard enough as it is).
I don't think my friend bentivogli is working in immigration department of UK to say iam wrong!
I stand by my statement as per experience of my friend who went through similar case.
For the information of bentivogli , such exchange of information takes place when a trarveller is suspected of involving in a terrorist or other unlawful activities or a potential threat to the country he/she is visiting.
The embassy/consulate of schengen country in India , might (repeat might) ask the traveller the reason for rejection of visa incase there is a note or stamped in the passport as "rejected'.
From what I've gathered, after talking to some experts, as long as all the visa papers are in order, it should not be a problem.
However, once i am rejected, it goes on the system, and this information will be shared across all countries. It's not about the question of being a terrorist or not, its more bureaucratic I guess. They just want to know your history, for eg, have you overstayed on your last visit or have you been deported from a country before, so that they can avoid unpleasantries in their country. Fair enough.
The Schengen visa form does not even ask if you've been rejected a visa for any other country apart from the Schengen ones, but like Citybell pointed out, thanks to the reject stamp on the passport, they might want to know the reason behind the rejection. I have been advised to attach my rejection letter and explain all the reasons when applyling, just in case. i know of cases where even Schengen rejects have been issued a Schengen immediately after. What can actually solve the problem is if i reapply to the UK and get my visa approved. I guess this is why my travel agent is insisting on me getting my UK visa before I go in for the Schengen. Unfortunately, due to the rejection and the time it takes to process a fresh application during peak holiday season, I wanted to skip my UK plans altogether.
As of now, I've put my travel plans on hold. Its only a vacation after all, so i might as well go for it when things are a bit more sorted and when I am better prepared...

I am Indian, 23 yrs old, unmarried, a freelance writer and photographer. I have previously travelled to Thailand and Cambodia.
This year, i wanted to spend my summer in EU-- UK, Italy and France to be specific.
I applied for my uK visitors visa, and got rejected, (in May 2010) mostly because I hadn't shown any proof of work (stupid me!). I have all my papers ready now, right from work published in magazines to letters from editors. However, am a bit wary of applying to UK again, especially because I've been told by many that being an unmarried 23 year old girl who wants to visit her friends in UK alone has a lot of odds stacked up against her.
I now want to apply for my Schengen visa (In mid june 2010). I'm visiting a friend in Venice, (shes Indian and on a student visa). Then we're planning to go to Rome, Tuscany, Florence and spend 3-4 days in Paris before I return home via Rome.
Im worried that my UK rejection will go against me and hence my Italian Schengen will be rejected. Is this possible? Even though I have all my papers in order, and will not go wrong in applying this time, am I going to be blacklisted because of my uK rejection?
Im heartbroken, really. All I ever wanted to do was travel, and now after saving up for it, I can see my dreams fall apart.
Pls help/Advice?

Hi I have the same issue - traveled to Thailand before , am a freelance artist and performer and my sister (Indian)and bro-in-law( British) live in the UK. just wanted to visit her... my visa was rejected. can u suggest what you did later? did u get a uk visa? thanks
