sydney and melbourne!

Hey can anyone recommend anywhere to stay in either sydney or melbourne? Looking for cheap accommodation either budget hotel or hostel? Going with my boyfriend so would rather have something private but can share to cut cost if the standard is good??

Hi,

You are spoilt for choice for good hostel accommodation in Melbourne and Sydney! They are probably the two best places for finding a hostel with the mix of atmosphere, facilities and price to suit your needs.

For Melbourne you would need to decide whether you are going to go Melbourne city or St Kilda (cool little hub that is a tram trip out of the city) as this is where most of the places are. I would recommend checking out Greenhouse Backpackers.

In Sydney you also need to choose which patch suits you - city or beach. I would recommend staying in the city as you are near all the main sights/nightlife etc and you are a short bus trip to the water. -snip- If you decided the beach was for you maybe checkout the Bondi Beachouse YHA.

I hope you have a great time!

Cheers, John -snip-

Gorgmo, I ahven't stayed in hostels in Melbourne becuase I live here, but I have been inside the and have heard good reports. It's even listed in the official Melbourne tourism site. They offer private rooms as well as dorms.

For funky, St. Kilda and Fitzroy are popular - St. Kilda is a beach suburb, while Fitzroy is an inner city suburb, very bohemenian. Lost of good pubs. Both are accedssible to the CBD by tram.

I second Greenhouse Backpackers in Melbourne, I stayed there for a few weeks! There were some couples staying there at the time, they had private rooms. St Kilda is cool, but more of a place to visit for the day I'd say rather than stay there...personal opinion of course. I have also been to Sydney, but didn't stay in a backpackers. However if you can find something around or near Darling Harbour, thats a great spot to be
