We live in Cape Town South Africa and will be over in the States in March to visit our son, daughter in law and new baby granddaughter in Los Angeles. We will be taking time out to do the above trip, the first half to Santa Fe just the two of us then from Santa Fe our family will fly out to join us and we will continue with them for the remainder of the trip.
Stay in Monument Valley instead of Mexican Hat. The views there are much better.
But if you are in the area, be sure to take Utah State Highway 261 north out of Mexican Hat up to the "Moki Dugway". This is one of the most amazing roads you'll ever travel on, even though it is a bit dangerous drive. Just go slow and enjoy the dramatic view from the top.

Also, be sure to go north to Moab, Utah and see Arches National Park, and if you have the time, also Dead Horse Point.
Here's a bit of movie trivia:
At the start of the second of the "Mission impossible" movies, you see Tom Cruise climbing one of the two "Mittens" buttes (which is in Monument Valley), then when he supposedly gets to the top, you see behind him Dead Horse Point (which is near Moab) over 90 miles away. Ah, the magic of Hollywood!
They obviously wanted to get two of the most dramatic shots in the same opening sequence.
Anyway, hope you enjoy your trip. For me, this is one of the best trips I ever took, and will probably go back again soon as I love the American southwest--and being from the northern California area, it doesn't take me long to get there.
I should probably mention that Sedona is a must, but Joshua Tree is nice but not so spectacular as the other places that you've mentioned. I'd rather take some time and go to the south end of Lake Powell (just across the state line from Page, Utah) and while near Page, I'd try and get someone to give you a tour of the "slot canyons" in that area--in particular the Antelope Canyon

While in the Grand Canyon, if you have the time, plan a trip to Havasu Falls. You can camp for the night there or stay in the Havasupai lodge. It's on the Havasupai tribal lands and you have to plan a trip there in advance, but well worth the trip!

Any recommendations for where to stay in Sedona. 4 adults and a baby. Which scenically is the nicest area.
The best place is just a little bit east of where the US highway 89 meets the road that comes in from Interstate 17. Almost anywhere in town is pretty good though as it is a short drive to see all the major sites.
I've taken a closer look and if you haven't booked yet, I would suggest either the Desert Quail Resort in Oak Creek, Arizona or the La Quinta in Sedona, Arizona. These are both on Hwy 179 (the road that runs from Sedona to I-17 and are both just a little bit east of the downtown part of Sedona itself.
These are 2 and 3 star places. If you want a 4 star place I would recommend either the Hilton Sedona or the Sedona Golf Course Resort.
