Hi guys,
....... and you travel the island as a group.
Just want to make sure you know that Thailand is not an Island. Yes, it has many Islands, but it is very much attached to the rest of South East Asia. You aren't looking into tours of Taiwan are you? It is an Island.
As for your questions, for me, 1000pounds is pretty steep, but I like to travel cheap. And yes, it is very very easy to meet people in Thailand. You can organize short local tours once on the road to help meet people.
Hi Izzy,
I am also travelling to Thailand for the first time in July. Going with a friend though. Unfortunately I can't offer any real advice other than what I would offer for any country. I will keep an eye on this post however as I too could probably do with some advice myself haha

A month seems like a long time to spend on an organised tour. It is ridiculously easy to organise and book your own travel and accommodation in country, and cheaper too.
Just do what everyone else does. Rock up to Khao San Road, check in to a hostel and start speaking to people. I'm sure you will find plenty of people in the same situation happy to buddy up.
Thailand is a very safe country in my experience, provided you exercise the same common sense you would anywhere.
Go for it and have fun!
I have seen month long tour in STA travel brochures and longer. They aren't cheap mind. Me and my pal are currently debating whether to do a tour or just go 'free range' I assume that you have to pay for the touristy places anyway so the overall cost would balance out .
I personally wouldn't recommend doing a month trip. If you stay in hostels and you're a friendly sociable person then it's fairly easy to meet other solo backpackers in Thailand in the same position as yourself looking to meet people.
If you're really nervous though, you could perhaps maybe look into doing a 7 day/10 day/14 day organised trip, and then once you gain confidence and experience from the trip, you'll be more comfortable about travelling on your 'own'. I put 'own' in quotes because when you travel in Thailand, if you stay in hostels, then you often meet other backpackers who you'll end up hanging out with and travelling around together. In my experience the hostels in Koh Phi Phi are particularly sociable places to meet people.
I was in Ao Nang a few weeks ago and at the hostel I was staying at, I met two girls who had met each other on an organised trip, and they were then travelling around Thailand together for a couple of extra weeks. So if you did do a trip then there's also the possibility that you might meet someone on the trip who has similar plans to yourself after the trip finishes.
As Scottboy has mentioned, it's a lot cheaper to travel on your own than on an organised tour. At the same time I've done organised tours over the years and generally enjoyed them, and they do take the effort out of travelling as the tour guide books all your travel/accomodation for you. Overall though, I would say maybe a short organised trip would be a better idea, and then once the tour finishes you'll be more confident about travelling on your own.
Hello! I am a 21 year old student at southampton uni. I am also planning on going to Thailand this summer alone (around June, July and August). I looked at tours but they seemed such an expensive way to just meet people! I am pretty confident though and happy to talk to most people, I was just planning on checking into a hostel and hoping I meet people! Alysha x
