North America Trip

We are flying to NYC at the start of May and from there we are going to get the bus down to Washington D.C. and the plans from there are to go to Chicago through South Dakota and then to Yellow Stone National Park then ending going down the west coast. We are from Manchester, England and we don't really know about the transport across the US. I am wondering if we would be able to get buses across these part but at the same time be able to take in the sites and explore between bus journeys?

Definitely check out the U.S. version of MegaBus for East Coast and the U.S. version of Greyhound Bus for the rest. There's some killer deals that go on with these companies - my friend took a bus from New York to Washington D.C. for something like $3!

The National Park Service has information on the Web for each park, including transportation options; and directions on how to get there. Tour companies operate in some parks, such as Yellowstone. Amtrak, which provides passenger rail service in the U.S., has excellent routes along both coasts, particularly the Boston-New York-Washington, D.C. corridor. It also offers service in the upper Midwest. If you want to explore, your best option is to rent a car. To avoid expensive drop-off charges, consider traveling in adjoining states, then returning the car to the same location you rented from. Airport rentals generally are more expensive than renting from in-town locations. If you're under 25, surcharges apply. In big cities, use public transportation as much as possible; otherwise you'll encounter hefty parking fees. Traffic also is likely to be bad at peak times. But driving is a pleasure in America's wide-open spaces, particularly in the West. It also may be a necessity, as accommodations, grocery stores, etc., may be few and far between. In urban areas, choices for accommodations and other things may be more limited in the central (or inner) city than in the suburbs. There's good reason why Americans love their cars!

There's more transport options on the coasts and in major cities. South Dakota won't have much to offer for public transport, but you should be fine in Chicago & California.
