General Help and advice!

Lauraloo86 has indicated that this thread is about General Guides

Hi, I'm flying into Sydney on my own around the middle of November. I'm doing either Oz Intro or Ultimate Oz for my first week, but then I'm pretty open with my plans. I want to do the East Coast at some point but ideally after I've met people. Let me know if you fancy meeting up maybe. I'm 29 and I'm gay by the way...just thought I'd better mention that lol!

Is it best to take a big backpack (and a small for general day to day) or a suitcase?

"Best" depends entirely on your requirements. The main reason (besides copycat behaviour) so many backpackers choose for the big backpack plus small daypack is that it's an extremely useful combination when you're on the road a lot, moving from destination to destination, particularly when you might have to hike for some distance between transport and accommodation. The daypack is there for your everyday exploration, and the big backpack for transporting things from hostel to hostel, and meanwhile you'll have your hands free (for taking photos, consulting your guidebook, or carrying bags with groceries)
Of course, you'll find people here who argue very convincingly to bring much less, and just stick to a single small backpack which you can always carry with you.

Are there any necessities that I need to take (clothing/footwear/meds)

Your passport and money. Everything else, if you discover that you really need it, you can just get there. (Excepting possibly certain medication, but even there you'll probably be fine bringing enough supply for a month and then getting more from a local doctor. (If this could apply to you, consult your own doctor about this rather than taking the word of someone on the internet!))
Basic packing tips would be clothing for a week (or for two days if you follow the light packing crowd), no more than one extra pair of shoes, as little makeup as you can get away with. Don't bring any favorite clothes, because after having worn near-continuously for a year, they'll be absolutely threadbare and ready for throwing out. Make certain your toiletry bottles have screw-tops so they don't spew their liquids all over your pack due to pressurization differences on the plane. (To be on the safe side, put them in extra ziplock bags.) Having several white, non-crinkly plastic bags frequently comes in handy, for storing/carrying a variety of things (dirty laundry, wet swim things, presents you want to keep safe, etc) They should be white, to prevent the ink from running off and ruining everything after a year of heavy use, and non-crinkly so you don't wake up your fellow dorm-mates when you put something in or take something out at night. A small flashlight is also frequently handy for use in dorm rooms at night. (Don't be the one who turns on the big light in the middle of the night!)

Are there any places best to go for solo travelers?

Wherever sounds attractive to you. There's loads of fellow solo travellers around, and no places which are "better" or "worse" for them in any meaningful way.

In general, I'd recommend taking things slow. Linger everywhere for at least 4-5 days to really get to know the place and find your favorite things about it. If you discover you really like a place, just stick around for additional weeks - don't give in to schedules and lists of checkmarks of things you want to see. Australia's too big to thoroughly see in a year anyway, so better make certain that the things you'll see and do will be experiences that'll last. You have the right idea with just going to see what happens. Having some sort of rough itinerary (clockwise or anti-clockwise around the country?) is frequently helpful to fall back upon if you just want to head on without having time to do research, but never be afraid to break that itinerary or backtrack.

Anyway, Australia's a wonderful place, and I'm sure you'll have a blast!

(Oh, and finally, before you head back home, make certain to find some time (like, at least 2-3 months) to see a bit of New Zealand as well. Superlatively gorgeous!)

Ahh Sander that is really really helpful Thankyou, I've pretty much done as advised. And I just figured anything I find I desperately need I can get over there!

I've already got a backpack and day pack so I'll go with that option as its seems so much easier.

Thanks very much for your advice X
