Getting fit for travelling....?

As it is getting closer to my leave date, I am starting to do more exercise (when I say more...I used to do pretty much nothing - few walks but not much). Doing several long walks a week and started swimming too. I thought it would be best to try and get in a fitter state for when I travel but I have never seen or heard of anyone else doing this...? Does anyone else prepare themselves physically for travel? I am not doing aything particularily physical on my travel - no hiking! But am just worried that the general walking about lots will wear me out because I am just used to sitting in an office all day!! Anyone else....?

It certainly won't hurt taking this approach! I wish I had done this a few years ago before a short trip to Australia (was living in the UK at the time), as I found myself getting tired a lot quicker than I had on previous trips. I'm an office worker too, and the job doesn't help much!

because I am just used to sitting in an office all day!! Anyone else....?

I go abroad regularly for work on just about every means of travel available to the human race. Difference is, I don't have the luxury of sitting in an office all day (!!). My morning often starts at 05:30 (not unusual to be 6 days a week and I'm not in my 20's anymore.. I wish) and doesn't get done till stupid o'clock (yes that time of day, sorry, 'night', does exist). Difference is, I have a sort of office but never get to sit in the chair. Someone else has the luxury of that role.
Before we go away to work (there's a team of us and we go overseas about 8-10 times a year, sometimes for a week or fortnight, or thereabouts), we all sit down in the pub, bar, bistro, cafe or whatever it's called where you live and decide whether it's going to be a long session each day or not so. Then we look at the local trend for a drink. If in Russia or Mexico it's obvious. Elsewhere (somewhere for the 1st time) we Google the local tipple and what visitors recommend to try and avoid. After that the health enthusiasts amongst us look at the nearby activities and see what the prices are. I personally stick with the people in the group (there's usually around 20 of us) that like to sightsee after a long day and find some music.
To answer your question from my little corner.. It's each to their own. Some of us like to work out for weeks before a trip and I just think.. 'Stuff it'. Work hard, party hard.

My hubby an I got back from a trip to Canada on the 18th of September and we have both gone on diets within a week of returning home in preparation for our return trip to Canada in November next year. I currently weigh 85kg and I want to be closer to 60-65kg before we leave next November. I found the weight I am currently carrying made my trip less comfortable as I had to squeeze into the seat on the plane and the bruises I got from that have only just faded to yellow this week. If I lose the weight I want I should find fitting into the seats on the plane much easier. I also found it hard hiking and things like that so I am hoping to be much fitter when I return.

I think the same way, and from past experience, fitness is so very important. I'm headed to Vietnam in 2 weeks and I can't get enough exercise. I well remember my first trip to Saigon - I was on the 7th floor of this hotel, and the stairs were straight out of hell. Had I not been in some form of fitness, I would not be here to write this now. I bought myself a recumbent exercise bike a few months ago, and that was the smartest thing I could have done. I just wish I could take it everywhere I go. I love to eat, and have a hard time stopping, so my solution is to buy only high fiber food, very little meat, plain yogurt, fresh veggies, and make a lot of homemade soups. I'm 66, and plan on living until at least 106 (and traveling until at least 100).

I also try to read food labels, avoid HFCS, pastries, candy and soda, but increase my intake of fresh fruit, and I swear by red wine and good coffee/tea. I've been overweight my entire life, but have never had a major illness or operation. I do have high blood pressure, but this is controlled with medication.

I do this, but usually for the cycling tours that I plan.

It sucks to start at completely zero, so about 2 months before I leave I start training trips that involve cycling for 30 kms and more during an afternoon.

If I didn't do this I would not be able to cover the usual distances on my cycling trip.

The more you do now the less it will be an issue during your trip and it's not just the physical side.

I plan for instance to take a walk with my fully packed backpack on a regular basis before I head off, just so I get adjusted to it since there will be more weight than I usually have with me.

Im definately getting fitter for when i go travelling next March. Not only because it will help me with carrying a heavy backpack long distances, trekking and any other things that fitness would be beneficial for, but because i want to look HOT on the beach!

That was going to be my next question...I am going to start taking a backpack with me on walks from now on cause it is only 8 weeks away! And I generally have a bad back anyway - OH JOY! haha

haha love it!!
