There is a recession here and unemployment has risen, but the situation is nowhere near as bad as the UK and Ireland. It sounds like you are pretty flexible with the type of work you are prepared to do so you should be fine. I've heard the job market is picking up here and by March things will hopefully have improved further.
You should be fine finding a job, if you have a qualification it will be even easier Grab the local newspaper or the NZ herald when you get here and have a look.
there are some jobs listed here too.
If you've good qualification then i don't think you would have any problem in finding job. You will surely get job in New Zealand if you have qualification, skills as well as experience in your work domain

Looks like i wont be able to travel to New Zealand now until around May time (im getting a tooth inplant done and cant leave before its complete!!) so i will be arriving in Winter but i still cant wait!!
I have a masters degree in tourism so it would be great to work in this area but im not sure if there will be jobs in this area for a backpacker. Im not too fussy though as long as i can earn some money somehow!
I would suggest working at a hostel. Just google "hostels in new zealand" and you'll find plenty there. Most hostels have job programs that let you stay there free if you do some light work. Happy travels.
