I am not 100% on Italian laws but I know that here in Spain you can only stay 90 days in a total of 180 days. Even if you leave the country and then later go back you still cant be here for more then 90days in a 6 month period.

1) 90 days total within 180 days. Example if you have spend ,say, 60days during your first visit and you intend to make another trip to schengen countries, then you can stay up to 30days (90-60days) within the visa expiry date.
2) There is no seperate Italian law as far as i know with regard to Schengen visa. All schengen countries need to(and follow)the same rule.The officer seems incorrect. You can re-renter whenever you like as long as Schengen visa is valid and that 90days has not expired. I was out of schengen area and then again re-entered schengen after a few days.No questions were asked.Ofcourse not in Italy though. You can google rules and/or enq.from Italian embassy.
Relax..you can visit for Christmas.
Three things should be kept separate:
- the maximum validity of a Schengen tourist visa (which is 90 days in a 180 day period, which effectively means 90 days in, 91 days out, 90 days in, etc);
- the actual validity of a specific Schengen tourist visa (which in many cases is less, for instance if you booked an organised trip; then the validity of the Visa often matches the duration of the trip), and
- the number of entries into the Schengen area from outside that you can make during the validity period (which can be one, or multiple entry)
Within the Schengen area, holders of a valid visa and passport generally speaking have freedom of movement. So unless you have criminal antecedents or something, Italy will not stop you from entering multiple times when from another Schengen country, and not from outside if you have a multiple-entry visa.
You will require a visa since you stay longer than 90 days in Italy. The 90 days application limit only applies to Schengen tourist visa, not to national long-term visa for one country. You cannot apply from a country in which you do not hold a residency.

This does clear up some questions, and I hope that Citybell is right, and that there are no separate laws for Italy alone, governing the Schengen Visa. That Officer was very convincing (and worrying)! However, I will take your advice and ask the Embassy.
I am really looking forward to some nice glühwein and a merry Italian Christmas I just hope the immigration folks are happy about it
