Hi, me and my girlfriend are going to be in B/A for this festive period....could anyone recommend the good areas for backpackers to stay in? do you think accomodation will get booked up? and where is the party!!? thanks luke
I spent xmas/new year in BA coming up for 2 years ago.
We stayed a week in each of 2 hostels. I booked 2 so we could get different experiences. Turned out they were 300 yards apart lol.
Anyway, they were in San Telmo which I found affordable, good accomm quality and very friendly in the most part.
Tango was one of them and it had air con. The other didn't. It hit 42 degrees for 8 hours on new years day so as you can imagine air con is essential.
The hostel will have a few great parties and also organise trips to varous clubs etc for you. I made my way (not sure how) to a club 60 odd km's from the hostel and back. It was grat but I never knew how far it was lol. Top tip would be to check that out!!
Now as much of a good time as I had I would rather have spent my NY in Bariloche where I headed next.
Enjoy it whatever you do.
San Telmo is a great area to stay in. I stayed in hostel which was a really cool, arty little place. It's not a party hostel though but I'm sure you won't have a problem finding somewhere to party in BA. Not far from the hostel is Plaza Dorrego which is a square surrounded by restaurants and bars, and is a great place to hang out. Tango dancing takes place in the square on Sunday nights.
I also stayed in guesthouse which was lovely - this is right in the centre in a great location near Plaza De Mayo.
I'd book accommodation in advance as it's the height of summer in Argentina at that time.
Yes, I think I forgot to say I booked well in advance. The "better" hostels (ie. air con prob) will book up fast. It was one of only 3 things I booked well in advance during 6 months in SA, the others being a ferry down the coast of Chile and the Inca Trail.
