Quickest and cheapest way is to pop over into Cambodia to get a visa extension. We tried popping over into Burma a few years ago, but you can't get a visa stamp / extension there - in fact they kept our passports on the Thai side and we were only able to go over to Burma for the day. Cambodia was a doddle though, and cheap.
Before I entered Thailand I got a 60-day Visa for $ 50 Aus at the Thai Consulate in Melbourne which saved me the hassle of a visa run. If you haven't entered Thailand yet this could be an option. Apparently you can also get a 30 - day extension at Thai immigration for a fee of 1,900 Baht.
A friend of mine is in Pattaya right now. He e-mailed me that the Thai Gov't has extended the free visas for another year. They were giving free 60 day tourists visas, expired March 5, 2010. Apparently the Thais will continue to offer free tourist visas until March 2011. I have not confirmed this with another source, but it would be worth contacting your Thai Embassy and asking.
