Typically, coming from Cuzco-> take train @ Poroy Station to Aguas Calientes ~3.5 hours. from Aguas Calientes -> Machu Picchu by bus (20 mins). Yes, you can do it on your own.
I've heard that you have to have a tour guide to climb machu pichu? They only take 500 per day or so, so i don't think that you can do machu pichu on your own, but ofc you can get to machu pichu on youre own. Not sure how it works.
Actually, only 400 people to climb Wayna Picchu. 200 people at 7AM and 200 people at 10AM. I was there last November 2009. But to Machu Picchu itself, it's ok. If you were to do the Inca Trail, THAT, you have to be with a tour guide whose licensed, you can not do that on your own.
