Hostels

Hello

Hey i cant help with fiji or nz but as far as oz goes there are so many hostels that the chances of them all being full are slim to none. In the bigger cities hostels are on almost every street.

Some that i'd recommend are wake up - sydney
calypso inn - cairns
cooee - st kilda

Thanks for the reply and the info, that helps me alot and i'll make a note of those and if i go i'll check them out.

Hi,

Aus, NZ, and Fiji will be a mad trip!

As to whether you need to prebook it really depends on the season in the place you are checking out. Sydney in November - March I would def recommend prebooking. I am sure it is the same at alot of hostels in NZ during their peak times.

I work at -snip- and we take alot of walk in bookings and are more than happy for people to rock up without a booking, the only catch is that sometimes not every room type is free. With hostelworld/hostelbookers etc it is easy to book your accom in the day or two before you arrive and it only costs a couple of dollars (their booking fee).

I hope you have a mad time!

Cheers, John -snip-

When were you thinking of coming? From around 20th December until the end of January/beginning February is school holidays in Australia and many hostels do get booked out, particularly those near beaches. School holidays for NZ are similar to ours.

When booking a hostel, I would advise you to book direct with the hostel, as booking through hostel agencies usually incurs a fee. If you're going to be having 10 nights or more in hostels, it pays to get a card. can be used world wide and there are many discounts available - transport, tours, food, drink, etc as well as members rates at their hostels. Some non YHA/Hi hostels will give a dollar or two of the price as well.

To find out where different hostels are and read reviews from other travellers, is perhaps one of the better sites.

Thanks guys for the advice. I'd be planning on traveling from July until December time so doesn't seem i'll have too much trouble unless in the Sydney around December time. I'll check out the sites you recommended also.
Should be a good trip.

If you go to the blue mountains, definitely check out the Flying Fox hostel in Katoomba, best hostel I've stayed in by far. In fact I'm still here after 6 weeks. lol.

I didn't like the Wake up hostel in Sydney, was full of yobbos when I was there, and those big places are really antisocial sometimes... Same thing with the YHAs... But hey, you might have a completely different outlook/expectation, and maybe I don't generally like the party lifestyle too much

Good luck mate
