I know this may sound like a stupid question but I am traveling to Thailand in September and then off to Australia for a couple of months.
Don't remember Australia, but Thailand has laundromats all over the place and fairly cheap. Just drop your stuff off and pick it up later

If you want to make us of laundrettes, you'll have to take enough spare clothes.
I just wash my own clothes every one or two days myself in the bathroom, I let it soak for about 30 minutes, and I hang a clothline in my room...
I'm with #4. It's either cold, so there are radiators in the bedroom (free washing and drying) or its hot and the sun does the same job. Bitta shampoo or soap does it for me. Quick rinse, on the line (whichever type) and dry by the morning. I will occasionally use a laundrette, but only if the train/bus is gonna be awhile.

Honestly, it takes 5 minutes to wash clothes in a bitta soap and rinse, then hang up. Out for a few beers (with the money you saved on the laundry charges) and when you get back, it'll all be drying nicely.
On a budget - I say.... Till I win the lottery.
Just get a routine. Showers are good. Dead easy to rinse off, then a quick wring out (again rolled up in a towel if you want stuff really quick) and just hang them up by your bed. It's not just saved money, but the hassle of taking them somewhere and having to collect them later.
Beware - you can start a craze in a hostel dorm. Suddenly everyone is an independent traveller.
We mostly do our own (while we are having a shower using soap!) but every now and again we put stuff into a laundry to give them a good wash. When choosing a laundry remember to check that they don't use a drier - surprisingly even though there is so much sun here in Asia, some laundry places still use driers to get the clothes dry instead of just hanging them outside. We find that the driers shrink our clothes too much and they end up looking like kiddie clothes after a while!

Yeah, you can certainly do your own laundry (I don't have any idea how much it costs in Australia so that may be a good bet there), but in Thailand, most hotels and many other surprising places (internet cafes, restaurants, bookstores, souvenir shops) have 12 or 24-hour laundry service for about 30 baht/kilo... if you'd like to stay in and spend 45 minutes washing all your clothes, that's fine, but for about $1 or $2 USD, you have somebody else wash, dry, and fold all your dirty laundry. It's wayy worth the money to me... unless you're on a heinously tight budget, I think it's better just to have the spare time for beach-sitting and beer drinking!
If Australia is anything like the U.S., they might have those super cheap self-service coin-operated Laundromats here and there where you can spend a fun afternoon playing Pac-Man (on one of the ubiquitous ancient arcade games they always have at those places) while your clothes tumble dry..
