I am going to be in London for 6 days with 2 16y/o. We are staying in a hostel, central location. Is it reasonable to rent bikes to get around? Does anyone have any recommendations on cheap rentals?
I'd stay clear of central London if at all possible, though I'm sure you know what you're doing.
Three of you, as well as map-reading? Just be aware.
edit: alongside the river would be good, especially upstream further out west - but maybe downstream, towards Greenwich? Might pay to check if bikes are allowed on public transport - just in case. Good luck.

I would recommend renting a bike, London can get very busy but in recent years there has been a large emphasis upon making London more bicycle friendly. If your visiting this summer I would recommend looking at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/12444.aspx although you might have already found it from the previous post, these bikes seem more for shorter periods of time. When you arrive and get your bearings would be best to look on yell.com or google etc to find a local one to you as some companies will post 'London' but could be more on the outskirts which would be no use.
In terms of free, Hyde park, you can also go past some of the other sites, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar square has a model of a ship built up inside a bottle, sounds more exciting than I've described.

I am a little nervous about biking in central London but I am a wanderer and certainly wouldn't be trying to read a map and ride at the same time, it's more about landing where-ever you stop for me and we can cover so much more of London on bikes than on foot. The parks look huge (maybe they aren't?), so it would be a good way to cover those as well...
I did find the information about Barclays bike share program, however it doesn't launch until the end of July and we are going next week!

is pretty big and Richmond is a nice place in itself.
Here's a link suggesting some routes around the river in case you're interested.
Most of them are a good way from the centre - perhaps further than you'd be willing to go - though I hope it helps.

Hi, It is a company that rents bikes near to the London Eye in southbank, it is a small place and the rent per bike is 3.50 an hour or 20.00 a day.

Last time I walked past there the bikes looked really old and scruffy. But that was some time ago, so hopefully they've got some newer ones now.
It's a good spot though, to get started from. A bit quieter south of the river.

Not really, i went last weekend just to have a day less ordinary around the thames
they have a large lange of bikes, the normal ones of 3.50 an hour are great,
i think they got new equipment cause all seen quite new, the electric bikes cost about 12 an hour, new ones, i dont think really much people rent them lol
