I'm traveling through India by myself for the first time. I definitely want to visit Kanyakumari and Coimbatore, but other destinations are open. Does anyone have any suggestions for a first time traveler, especially about safety on the trains and buses? I am very concerned about arriving at destinations late at night. What can I do to stay safe?
Hey, I am travelling India alone as welll! Starting in July 2010 through August end (before going to grad school!!). Would start from Mumbai and explore the south and then head off to the north. I don't have much idea of the south as yet though! Hoping to see the kerala backwaters. When do you start off?

Going to interiors of Tamil Nadu next week. Language will definitely be a problem but I am more concerned abt safety. Will be taking night trains/ local buses... nothing is fixed yet, not even places. Family is tensed but...
