Signle Female Traveling Alone

Hello everyone, I am new to this site and to travelling. You will see on my profile that I am only able to travel in short blocks (a few days/weeks at a time) and need to keep costs really low!
Obviously I am aware that I could be considered vunerable by travelling alone but am hoping the short periods of time will help this. I plan to start off with European cities and move on after that.
Can anyone give me any tips about safety, budgeting, places to stay, or any other general advice?
Thank you in advance!
Rach

Hey Rach89,

I've been to Edinburgh, too. It's a beautiful city. (I read your profile)

Being a single female travelling alone is definately doable. The great thing about it, especially if you are a little shy like me, is that it forces you to meet people and open up. I have never felt lonely while travelling by myself. So I encourage you to go for it!

Well, good luck!

Steph

hey there! u are not alone! I will be traveling SE asia next yr by myself too! Meeting different people is usually my fave during travels aside from the beautiful scenery that I see.

Hi,

Most of my travels have been alone and I don't find it bad because it allows you to see the things that you want to see instead of having to think of others or waiting for them.

I've normally stayed in YHA's so I joined as a lifetime member over 10 years ago. It's been well worth it! Most of the hostels that I've stayed in are pretty nice except for the one in surfer's paradise which was CRAP! I've never really joined others when travelling because I am a loner I suppose and I'm not into drinking lots and partying so I tend to keep to myself.

Keep your valuables with you. I always keep my passport with me in my bag or on my person. I tend to wear clothes that have inner pockets or lots of pockets when travelling so that I can keep stuff in different pockets. I don't know about the hostels in EU but some of the ones in Australia have lockers in the bedrooms where you take your own lock and can keep your tramping bag in.

I tend to take a small backpack with me and sometimes have it in my front, sometimes at my back. Take some re-usable bags with you in case you go shopping.

Wear comfortable shoes! I normally take a pair of Jandals/flip flops for showering in the hostels (I take my valuables in the shower as well, especially if I can't lock my bags) and a nice pair of walking shoes because I tend to walk a lot to see the sights.

Take some ziplock bags as well because they are quite handy. I put my passport in one just in case it rains and it keeps it nice as well.

I'll be travelling to Austria in a few weeks. I'm going on a self guided cycling tour from Salzburg to Vienna. It's going to be very exciting!

I hope you have fun travelling by yourself!
