Hi, I am meeting my sister in LA on the 17th of Sept. She has been working there for 2 months. We leave LA on the 30th to return to Melbourne Australia; so we have about 13 days to see USA. I was thinking Chicago, Washington and NYC. Any ideas would be appreciated. Should we fly or train? We are both in our early 20s and my sister has a good job so she will be paying for the trip, I am keeping her company and carrying the bags. Thanks in advance.
Why would you fly to the other side of the country if you have only 13 days that can be spend in California, with sidetrips to Utah, Nevada and/or Arizona?
I would visit San Francisco, the Big Sure road between LA and SF, a national park like Yosemite, visit Death Valley, go gambling in Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and back to LA.
Unless you only like cities of course, than you should travel a littel bit further, although SF and Las Vegas can keep you busy for about a week. The other week could be NY, maybe sidetrip Washington or Boston.
Hi Utrecht,
My sister has already been to Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and San Diego on the weekends she has been in LA. We both want to go to NY and I love American history and would like to go to Washington. My sister has mentioned Chicago but I don't know in what order to approach the travel. We have to return to Australia via LA. Do we go to NY first and then by train to Washington, or plane? Where does Chicago fit in and would Boston be better? I would like to go to Disneyland (we're both big kids) and we want to run up the stairs in Philadelphia. I know...don't say anything. But as I said I don't know the best way to approach it, the logistics. We don't want to drive. San Francisco sounds good. Any adivice would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Got this message by PM as well and send you one back. Have fun!
Given the time of year, here is another vote for San Francisco, Carmel and Big Sur. The weather will be perfect and tourist season is over - no crowds.
But if you want to go east coast, by all means fly. NYC is nice this time of year as well.
Good luck.
First of all, yes, you should fly to New York (I strongly suggest Virgin America). I would take the train to Washington - a great deal to see. I was born in Philly, but it's not worth stopping in on such a short trip. Rather, i would rent a car and go to in Virginia for 2 days. You mention Chicago, but I would also avoid that town. I would then fly to San Francisco or Seattle and spend the rest of the time on the West Coast. Suggest you rent a car in Seattle and drive down to LA. (San Francisco is the best of California, and LA is the worst!)
Just my 2 cents!

Chicago is a great place to visit, but if you're short on time then I'm not sure about DC. It's nice enough to spend a day (and that's all it takes) walking round the major attractions, but the place has this really humdrum feel that you wouldn't expect of a city that size.
If you're looking for another east coast city then Boston's pretty cool, or failing that Philadelphia - both are a reasonable Amtrak or coach ride from NYC.
Hello
I am planning a 4-5 week trip in the US for next summer and have found a good way to plan your trip is to take a look at some of the tour packages. Eg contiki, trek america, footloose, intrepid. The brochures show the different routes and sights to be seen on the way, so take a look at the website for trip ideas :-). I've found it's helped me to get started with my plans. Take care and enjoy.
