australia trip planning

My original idea was to fly to Perth, travel from here on Aussirail pass through to Cairns stopping a various locations along the way for a week maybe each time and then travel back to Perth to fly home.
Now I am thinking it would be better to fly to either Perth or Cairns on one way ticket, then travel via Aussirail stopping at various places, and then fly home from other side, rather than travel up and down Australia twice.
I would intend staying with helpx hosts in the outback areas most of the time with an odd night in the cities stayin in a hostel. I'm not really a big fan of cities, I would rather be out in country areas with the wildlife and scenery. I'm intending to stay 4-6 weeks.Any ideas or views appreciated

I think you're right, you'd be better off getting a one way ticket to Perth and a one way ticket out of Cairns. 4-6 weeks isn't really long enough to do this trip properly, it's about 6400km by road so you're looking at averaging between 230km a day and 150km/day. By rail there isn't a lot to do between Perth and Adelaide, I'm not sure the train even stops. Which outback areas were you planning on staying in? If you like the outback you might be best going Perth to Adelaide then up to Tennant Creek and over to Cairns.

If you're keen on catching the train maybe catch it between Perth and Adelaide or Perth and Melbourne and then use greyhoud busses up the east coast. In my opinion you need at least 4 weeks to do between Melbourne and Cairns properly, and the long haul intercity trains aren't much good.

Hi timtravels,

Aye I dont think train stops between Perth and Adelaide. Maybe I should avoid WA altogether and just stick to outback between Adelaide/Melbourne and Cairns.
I just thought the train would be a good way to see Australia, but then again you aint gonna see much whizzing along at 100mph!
I don't know what Outback areas I will be staying in, where would be good? Its not that I dont wanna go to the cities, just dont want to spend all time there/
Cheers

My favourite piece of outback is in north west Australia, but it's pretty far from everywhere. If you want to have a look at the outback then catching the train from Perth might be a good way to do it and you'll get to cross the nullarbor. The area around Perth is quite interesting, beautiful beaches and some good hiking in the Sterling Ranges.

Depending on the time of year you're coming to Australia I'd probably focus on Sydney to Cairns, you'll get a good variety of Australia and there are some small towns around Ayr and Bowen that still feel like country. If you want to have a look at the outback, you can head inland to Charters Towers or Hughenden from Townsville. This way you have the option of tourist type stuff at the Whitsundays, Fraser Island and the Barrier Reef and you can head west if you get sick of it.
