I've been checking out return flights for this route and the cheapest I can find is with Thai Airways for about £350, which is about twice as much as I expected! Does that sound about right?
That's right, it's an expensive place to travel to. I'm paying $312. for a Hanoi-Luang Prabang return trip. There's only 2 or 3 airlines serving LPQ, and none are LCC.
Will you consider flying from BKK to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and then have a 2 day on boat cruise down from the border to Luang Prabang?
Of course if you have more time.
I know you said no over land but there is a sleeper train from BKK to Nong Khai where you can cross the border to Vientiane and fly to LPQ? Not checked on the flights from VTE to LPQ but the surely they couldn’t be more expensive than £350!!

I will be travelling next Aug, but looked at a few different months to see if it was cheaper but it didn't seem to make much difference.
Are there any tips to find cheap flights? I need to take the fastest method of transport so overland isn't an option.

Did you check on Lao Air from Vientiane or from Bangkok?
When I went to L P it was quite a few years ago, I used Lao Air from Vientiane. When I purchased the ticket from a travel agency in Vientiane the price was pretty reasonable back then.
