The distance from La to San Frans is about 347 miles (558 kilometer). It may require almost a day or longer to travel at the speed of 30-40 km/h. If have a choice when driving between Los Angeles to San Francisco, start in LA to avoid afternoon traffic. Going south, leave San Francisco early to have the best chance of getting to LA before backups begin. Between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo, California Hwy 1 merges with US 101 or becomes an uninteresting side road. Most people take US Hwy 101 instead.
The shortest distance (via Interstate-5) is actually 382 miles, which is 615 kilometers.
If you take US 101, the distance is 420 miles, which is 676 kilometers. This is a much more interesting and scenic route than the shorter route.
