UK visiting USA

My daughters BF tried to visit USA visa free from the UK and they sent him back to Manchester from Atlanta. This was due to a misdemeanor drug charge that was not even tried in a court of law in England, and took place over 10 years ago. They're telling him now he needs a VISA to get into the USA. Anyone know anything about these laws?

My question is: Did he tell them about the drug conviction or did the US officials find it when they scanned his passport?

He did not tell them, they fingerprinted him in Georgia and found out.

Thank you for that. It seems the US has really tighten up their entry screening in the last few years. Obviously the UK has shared their fingerprint and criminal database with the US & Canada. A TP member informed us that the US FBI has shared all their records with Canada, and also the reverse. A US TP member was on a cruise to Alaska and was denied entry into Canada because of a pot conviction from the 60's. Hard to believe but true. No more lying on the entry form!

i havn't been to the U.S as a adult yet ( went as a child with school) but i thought you needed some sort Visa to get into U.S reguardless.
Also in layman's terms if you have a criminal conviction the U.S arn't going to let you in and they will know.

All UK citizens wishing to visit the US need to apply for a clearance under the Visa Waiver Program regardless of their criminal record.

I can't see how he was convicted if it never went to court?

Similarly I'd find it pretty crazy if police in the UK were now sharing information about 'misdemeanours' as you put it like cautions and warnings.
