Hi Ellen,
Few tips and notes:
1. Make sure your visa allows you to stay 6 months. most visa are valid for 6 months but allow a maximum of 90 days per stay (then you must leave the country and re-enter, sometimes it is allowed only after spending at least 2 months outside India)
2. Try also in www.indiamike.com, http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/index.jspa, http://www.travbuddy.com if you haven't already
3. In case you will not find a travel buddy before you leave - Don't worry! it is very easy to find travel buddies in India.
Good luck with your journey!
Ellen

I start my trevel to India from December 30 in Delhi (flight across London). I'm 20 year old male. If you interesting let me know
Hey dude =)
I want to travel in India too. I am looking to go into Europe in Jan '11 but I really want to travel India. My only problem at the moment is money for me. I know for a fact that I will have to work on my travels. I will have enough to get to India and maybe live for a few weeks with the cash I have now.
How will you finance your trip? Have you saved enough to go already? I live in North Wales and I am 21 Male. I know your looking for a female really, but incase you dont get a reply, then I would like to join
All I need to know really is how you go about getting a visa, how much it costs, how long it takes to proccess and what how you will fund your travel
Cheeers
Rob :D
Hey Rob,
I'm open to options to be honest! Would just be nice to arrive into India with someone rather than on my own!
I have heard you can survive off very comfortably £500 a month..
I just googled about how to get my visa, printed it off the web and I've filled it all in now so just need to get passport photos and then send it off. Think it's about £55 for a 6 month visa..? Think it takes a couple of weeks, it depends if you go the embassy or send it off in the post.
You also need to get some vaccinations.. I'm booked in to get my Yellow Fever next week but you also need to get Hep A, Typhoid and some others.. make an appointment at your GP and they'll advise you what you need and what you can get on NHS. The soonest appointment at my GP is after the date I'm planning on leaving so I'm having to go private
I'm planning on going with £3000 and a credit card for emergencies. Should be more than enough for 4 months.. I've just been googling and reading other peoples stories and blogs etc to get all the info!
Hope I've been helpful.. still new to this myself!
:D
Hey,
I've just come back from India. I was staying at a children's home for 3 months helping out and playing with amazing children who sometimes or usually seemed much more sensible and knowledgeable than i did. Don't go to India with expectations, just let it envelop you and don't try to fight it or you'll be overwhelmed. I'd suggest going with a male for the first part, especially if your up north as they don't recognize women as much. It would save you getting into a taxi and feeling insecure there by yourself with a male driver whose constantly peeking over at you. Also, DON'T wear anything skimpy. Go loose baggy clothes and no tank tops or tops that show cleavage. I'd suggest buying the typical salwar kameez and tuni (pants and short leaved top that covers your bum with a backwards scarf across your neck) when you get there as you'll fit in better and the locals will think that you know what your doing so will respect you more. Just for fun i'd suggest trying to use your hand to eat as they do (right hand only), although probably not in fancy restaurants. It takes some practice, but watch the locals and learn from them. I had no choice but to eat this way at the children's home in Hyderabad, and learned to love it and was really disappointed to have to pick up a knife and fork again on returning home to Canada. I loved it there and am going back as soon as i can... don't pity the people there, they are wise in many amazing ways even if they don't have loads of money. If you want to help i suggest giving your money to well established organizations or volunteering somewhere instead of giving money to beggars on the street, but that's up to you... it breaks your heart to see some parts of India, but be strong and take your cues from the locals even if they sometimes seem harsh... they know the ways there better than you.
Hey, Wow 3000 is alot haha. I know for a fact that I wont be able to save that much by then, I think I can save upto 700 ish by Jan. That money would go towards my flight and visa etc. 500 a month is alot. I went through Europe for 6 weeks on 450. I camped alot and used some hostels.
I wouldnt mind coming over with you to be honest. Im just not sure you would be happy with the fact I wont have alot to go with
Rob
Rob im more in your boat with the spending mate. Have you done any planning for your europe trip? Im working in London but will be handing in my notice at the end of november, to work one last month (december). Im south african but been living in London this year doing the 9-5 haul... keen to get out there, travel around without much of a plan, work along the way where possible (dont want this to be an expensive thing, it would take away from the experience). Most important thing for me is to take it easy and enjoy myself and potentially have a great year/years. I also fancy spending summer months in greece or somewhere beachy working in a bar/club.
Let me know your plans if you interested in doing some travelling mate.
Mark
Hey mate.
I havent done any planning mate. I will use skyscanner.net to find the cheapest flight to a European country and fly there when the time is right. I havent go a job at the moment because I have just finished in the army, but I am saving for the trip as best I can.
I am up for going anywhere after xmas is over. If you wanna join, then lets go and hit the road my friend
