Start in Bangkok and end in Bangkok! Some travelers purchase one way flights to Thailand and then one way flights to elsewhere from another location. Do the math on that choice. Some one way flights are almost the same price as a round-trip flight to Bangkok. It may be cheaper to purchase cheap flights in that part of Asia to return to Bangkok for your onward flight. Just do the math on first.
When you get to Bangkok you will find several choices for transportation to various hotels. Some young travelers choose Khao San Road area but other travelers choose different locations to make use of the Skytrain. If you arrive at the airport late at night after midnight there are fewer transportation choices but a meter taxi to many locations in Bangkok usually comes to around 330-390 baht which includes toll charges, surcharge and meter fares. If you arrive earlier you have a choice of the new Rail Link to take you into the Pratunam area of Bangkok and from there get the Skytrain or cheap meter taxi to other area.
You can purchase flights to other cities when you are in Thailand. This way you are more flexible if you meet other travelers for mutual travel. Buses, trains and discount airlines are available. Bus service is pretty good. Some young travelers use some dodgy travel agencies to book buses to many places (Google up bus scams Bangkok/Thailand) and have problems. For a bus ride go to a real bus station and just put your money down on a ticket!

You can use Google for directions to many cities in Thailand. You can also use Google for "what to see and do in (?)" or "how to get from Bangkok to (?)" also.
Figure out your budget and determine how much you can afford for hotel rooms and then ask for suggestions in that price rage. Use a baht figure. Khao San Road isn't the only place with cheap rooms.
