yes, i would definitely agree that you should stay in Melbourne's CBD. my b/f and I stayed at a cool short stay apartment right in the centre and it was awesome. http://apartmentalkira.com.au/
It was pretty pricey though, so if you're looking for something cheaper you could try one of the Quest apartments or even a hotel like The Victoria - which is a bit skanky, but not so exey. hope that helps. have fun.
