Myself and my husband have just sold our business and have a chance to do some travelling; I really like the idea of just going off and living somewhere for a year, somewhere thats really cheap to live but still safe to live with a 4 year old, maybe somewhere that we could get him some schooling and meet with other english speaking families.
Philippines is a nice and safe place. It has quite affordable cost of living and you can easily find reasonably priced house there. English is also widely spoken here.
Beside the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia could be a good option too. They are safe, child/family-oriented, relatively cheap, you can find a nice area to rent a house, there are english schools in major towns and they have reasonably good healthcare systems and general infrastructure.
You can also make side trips to nearby countries, like to Laos or to the hyper-modern Singapore.
You will however need to check visa requirements to make sure you can stay longer than 3 months. There are many foreigners living in these countries, so I guess it is possible if you have a long term contract or make some investment.
