Baffled by visa requirements when country hopping

Hi all

Simone,
I flew into SIN from LAX and was given my 90 day visa w/o showing an onward ticket. I did not have anything to show Immigration at that point. I was e-mailed an acceptance letter from a VN travel agent the next day. I flew SIN-SGN 5 days later. Immigration can ask for onward travel, but a US or UK citizen is just not going to be denied entry because you do not have onward travel documents. Most of us fly on e-tickets now, so there is nothing to show Immigration except a number.

You will most likely enter Malaysia via road or rail. They will give you a free 90 day tourist visa and do not expect you to have onward documents.

One thing you do need to check is if your airline will allow you to fly into SIN on a one way ticket. Check. Good luck with your planning.

I have entered Singapore and Malaysia a few times and I don't ever remember being asked for a return ticket. Verify that a single, one way flight will be cheaper than a round trip ticket to Singapore. For some airlines there is not much difference in a round trip and a one way flight. Do the math, it might be cheaper to get back to Singapore for a return flight home.

The train out of Singapore will take you to KL, on to Penang, on to Hat Yai Thailand and on up to Bangkok. You must have some idea on when you will return home maybe purchase your return ahead of time and if you have to pay a little fee to change your dates so be it.

Good luck.
