East Coast Aus Travels Alone

Hi, I am 26 and set to travel the East Coast of Oz and then NZ alone, starting in Cairns in November, and have 4 months to do it all. I've been looking at forums and threads to get some tips, and found some useful info, just thought i'd post some questions I specifically wanted to know. I've decided against the oz exp as reading a LOT of reviews I think im too old (cant believe im saying that!) and also want to know that in peak season I can get a bus when I need it and not wait days and days, so will probably grey hound or car share.

Can't give you any advice on Gilligans in Cairns, except that if it's the one with the bar downstairs then it was pretty loud when I was up there.

Port Douglas has a nice beach, the Daintree is well worth seeing and Cape Tribulation is nice I'd visit both and on the way up drop in at Mossman Gorge. While you're in Cairns it's worth taking a drive around the Atherton Tablelands to check out the waterfalls, there's some photos in my gallery of the area.

Hi Tim, that is indeed Gilligans, it has a bar downstairs, seems like a very similar place to Wake Up in Sydney (which I've provisionally booked). Did you stay there then?

Thanks for the advice RE: places to see, will definitely try doing all of that, and will check out your pics now.

I also stayed in wake up in sydney and loved it so where is this other hostel that is liek wake up so i go when im there ??

Im not sure if it's actually the same hostel as in owned by the same company, but its called Gilligans and its in Cairns and sounds very similar to Wake Up in that it has a bar downstairs.

Hi Dan,

I'm in similar situation. Heading out to Cairns on 27th September. I definitely like a good drink and a dance but enjoy my sleep too so I'm picking one of the quieter hostels. I've been looking into barrier reef trips, white water rafting in Tully (they do transfers from Cairns), Port Douglas, Cape Trib and Daintree as well.

At the end of the day, just do what's best for you. Like I said, I like having a drink and meeting people, but I can do that over here and I'm going out to Oz to see the sights not just to have a year long booze trip

Rach x

Hi Dan, I've booked gilligans for the first couple of weeks for my stay at the end of September, couple of reasons why... They do a free airport pick (which is one less thing I need to worry about) / I WILL be partying a lot at the start of the trip, so why not go the best place for it and also with it being so lively I think it'll be a very good place to meet people!

Same for xmas, I've booked wake up, because it will be lively, I've booked another for newyear just incase it gets too much though haha
